Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do I get started marketing ACN Internet Access?

It is very simple to get started marketing ACN Internet Access. In fact, it is as easy as marketing long distance and paging services.

For customers who already have Internet service through another provider, you simply need to instruct them to sign up for ACN Internet Access online at www.acninc.net. For customers who do not already have Internet access, you will need to give them the ACN Internet Access software, currently available in CD format through our Order Entry Department. There are easy-to-follow instructions included on the website and in the CD package, so your customers should have no difficulty in signing up.

You also need to give your customers your RUID number and internet password if you have one (see question number 10 of this document for further details). They will be prompted to enter it during account setup, and this is how customers will be tracked to you for commissions and the "Free for Three" promotion. Whether signing up online or with the CD, the process is very simple with prompts to guide the customer through each step of the way. There are no LOAs involved, the registration is the only sign up required.

For information on ACN Internet Access, including its features and benefits, simply visit www.acninc.net, and
acncanada.net, or purchase ACN Internet Access brochures through our Order Entry Department.

2) Can ACN Internet Access do what America Online does?

Yes. AOL has simply compiled common Internet features into one package. Every feature AOL has can be accomplished while using ACN Internet Access. For example:

Instant massaging (buddy lists) - With this feature, you are notified when AOL users that you have designated have signed on to AOL, but you can only look for "AOL buddies." With ACN Internet Access, we have established links to Yahoo! Instant massaging where you can establish your own (buddy lists) and chat with friends and family regardless of their ISP.
Multiple e-mail accounts (i.e., screen names) - ACN plans to offer more than one e-mail box per Internet account in the near future. In the meantime, there are many web sites available that offer free e-mail, such as www.hotmail.com, www.juno.com and www.altavista.com. Multiple screen names for parental controls - AOL offers the feature to control what sub-accounts (maximum of four with AOL) can access and view. This is a particularly useful feature when trying to block out "kid-unfriendly" sites. There are a number of websites that you can access with ACN Internet service that offer parental controls, giving the customer more flexibility and choices than AOL. From the www.acninc.net home page, check out the "Family" link category then scroll down to the "Parental Controls" heading. One way to set up a "parentally-controlled" Internet Access account is to follow these steps:
Sign up for two ACN Internet Access accounts Sign up (at least) three people in order to get one of your Access accounts FREE
Download parental control software from one of the ACN-suggested links Apply the parental control to one of the ACN Internet Access accounts

3) What are ACN’s plans to offer additional features and products?

Access from a Mac - Mac users that have Internet access with another provider may sign up for ACN Internet Access online. Simply navigate to the ACN Internet home page (www.acninc.net), click "Sign Up," then click "Apply Today." For Mac users that are not online, we will offer the necessary software in the near future. In addition, MAC users can view our MAC Sign-Up Support help tools by visiting www.acninc.net/self help.
Commercial (dedicated access) product – As more of our users require such services, ACN will add this service.
Personal website offered Fall '99.
A prepaid (in one-year increments) product - There are no current plans.

4) What if my customer does not have local access?

ACN Internet Service covers more then 90% of the population. However, ACN buys network time from national internet backbone providers, ACN is NOT building its own network. For this reason, it is out of ACN's control as to where new local numbers are added. ACN does share local dial up requests that we receive from our representatives with the national providers, however, they have their own criteria as to when and where new numbers are added. ACN world like to have coverage to all 100% of the US population, unfortunately that is not possible at this time. As our network providers add local dial up numbers, ACN will add those numbers and announce the additional numbers on the ACN website and "facts-on- demand."

If an Independent Representative knows of an area with several potential customers where ACN does not currently have coverage, he/she should e-mail [email protected] with information about the area (area code and NXX/first three digits of the telephone number).

5) Can I keep my e-mail address from my previous Internet access provider?

An e-mail address consists of two parts: {user name}@{domain name}. The domain name is owned by the Internet access provider - you can’t take it with you. The user name is usually assigned by you. Obtaining a specific user name depends on whether someone else has already claimed the name. If you were fortunate to get the user name "joe" with AOL, your email address would be "[email protected]." If "joe" is not already claimed by another ACN Internet Access customer, you could claim it as your user name, making your e-mail address "[email protected]."

If you need to keep your e-mail address from your previous service provider there are ways to economically accomplish this. Some providers offer a minimum access product (such as10 hours per month) for a nominal charge ($4.95 per month). You may switch your access plan to the minimum plan, keep your e-mail account and have your e-mail forwarded to your ACN e-mail account (consult your former service provider for forwarding procedures). Once you have informed your friends, family and colleagues of your new e-mail address, you can cancel with your previous ISP.

6) How are customers linked to an independent representative?

When your customers sign up for Internet Access, they must type the Rep’s RUID number into the appropriate box (ACN Rep’s RUID). This gives you commission and qualification credit for those customers. To get "FREE for Three" credit for a customer, the customer should type your ACN Internet Access user name into the "Referring Customer User Name" field. If neither is typed in, or is typed in incorrectly, you can call Representative Services or visit member support on the www.acninc.net website for instructions on how to correct this situation.

7) How are my customers’ customers linked to me, the independent representative?

When your customer, Customer A, signs up a customer, Customer B, they must be linked in order for Customer A to get "FREE for Three" credit. Customer B will type Customer A’s ACN Internet user name into the "Referring Customer User Name" box. This links Customer B to Customer A. Customer A is linked to you with your RUID number (for commissions and qualifications). Customer B is linked to you by way of these two links.

8) What equipment does a customer need in order to become an ACN Internet Access customer?

If your customer is not online currently, they will need:

a computer: 486/66 MHz minimum (Pentium/90 MHz or faster preferred)
a modem: 14.4K minimum (28.8 kHz or faster preferred)
Windows operating system: Windows 3.1 minimum (Windows 95/98 preferred)
a CD-ROM drive
a credit card or debit card (to pay for the service each month): Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover. Bank cards cannot be accepted.
If your customer is connected through another service provider, he/she can apply for ACN Internet Access by signing onto the Internet with their current service provider, navigating to www.acninc.net, clicking "Sign Up", clicking "Apply" and then filling out the online application. NOTE: If they are using an operating other than Windows 3.1, 95/98 or Mac, Customer Technical Support will be unable to help them.

9) What does a customer need from an independent representative to sign-up for ACN Internet Access?

The customer only needs the ACN Internet Access CD (if they are not signing up online) and the independent representative’s RUID number an their internet user name (if they have one.)

10) What is an RUID number? Where can I get mine?

An RUID number is assigned by ACN to every independent representative. It is printed at the top of every customer list, supply order and hierarchy report. It can also be obtained by calling Representative Services at 248-699-4000 and 248-699-5000. Each telephone number will have prompts new reps. can follow to obtain their RUID.

11) Do I need to get a CD for each customer?

No, however, it is highly recommended you get a CD for each customer. Although a CD can be used for as many customers as you can sign up, there are advantages to giving every customer a CD:

If the customer’s hard drive fails, it will be extremely helpful to have the Internet software readily available on CD to reload.
Having the CD allows the customer to sign up other customers in order to receive "FREE for Three" credit
Although the software can be downloaded from the Internet, doing so can take hours, depending on the customer’s modem speed.
If the customer ever has to reload the Internet software, having the CD can help ensure they load ACN’s customized version of the Netscape browser.

12) Do I get commissions from Internet customers if I am not an Internet customer?

Yes. You do not have to be a subscriber to ACN Internet Access in order to receive commissions on your Internet Access customers. However, make sure you provide your RUID number to new users and instruct them to type it into the registration sign-up pages when prompted.

13) When are commissions on Internet customers paid?

These are paid the same as long distance commissions.

14) If the ACN position is a partnership or business and more than one partner has Internet service, then can each partner earn ?" How?

The "Free for Three" promotion is offered to all ACN Internet customers. Therefore, in this case, each partner - who has his/her own Internet service with ACN- would be considered an ACN Internet customer. Then, each partner is eligible for "Free for Three." Any customers who signed up with either partner would enter the RUID of the partnership position, and the User Name of the person who referred them. Each partner would receive credit for customers he/she personally acquired and each partner would have to acquire at least 3 customers to be eligible for "Free for Three."

15) What about customers that have pre-paid their access fees in advance?

The benefit of pre-paid access is it’s typically cheaper than month-to-month. The disadvantage is that customers have already paid for their access and will not get a prorated refund if they want to switch access providers.

16) What if a customer enters my RUID number incorrectly?

It is advisable to check your customer list often. If an Internet customer you recently signed up is not listed, call Representative Services to obtain credit for that customer.

17) Can a customer sign up for ACN Internet Access without an RUID number?

Yes. Your customers can simply fill out their information, leaving the RUID number field blank. Then, once your customer signs up, you can contact Representative Services or visit the member support area of the www.acninc.net website for instructions on how to correct this situation.

18) Can I mail CDs to my customers?

Yes. On the back of each CD is a place to apply a mailing label and a stamp. The U.S. Postal Service will deliver CDs. Do not remove the plastic. You can apply your own return address label on top of ACN’s return address.

19) Does ACN offer commercial web hosting?
No, currently we do not. However, we do plan on offering this service in the near future.

20) Why doesn`t’t ACN offer 800 number access?

Internet access over an 800 number is expensive. It is cheaper for a Qwest customer without local access to call a long distance access number (at $.09/minute or $5.40/hr) than to call an 800 number (more than $6.00/hr).

21) Can I protect my children from the "bad stuff"?

Yes. From ACN’s acninc.net web site, click "Family" and scroll to the bottom. From there you are linked to the most effective parental controls on the Internet.

22) Is my customer’s access automatically canceled with his/her former service provider when he/she applies for ACN Internet Access?

No. Your customer must cancel their former service in order to not be charged for Internet Access by two access providers.

23) Does the addition of the new access numbers affect my existing ACN Internet Access customers?

A: No. Adding new access numbers does not affect current customers. However, customers may want to
periodically check the access number list for their area for numbers that may connect at faster rates.

24) Does the addition of the new access numbers require a special CD or a different registration procedure?

A: No. The new access numbers do not require changes to the registration process or a ‘special’ CD (the existing CDs will work). Changes to the access numbers are posted on the website and available to everyone
